The delightfully small and still relatively unspoiled village of  Mochlos has a host of tavernas clustered at the edge of the sea, but for my money, Mesostrati is tops. It is immune to the vagaries of fashion, so you won’t find any pretentious swank here. If you can tear yourself away from the exquisite dip they bring with the bread (fresh yoghurt with wild garlic, wild fennel, dill & parsely) savor simple taverna food with the freshest, high quality ingredients prepared expertly with some inventive touches. The ubiquitous Saganaki is a light-as-air filo pastry with the addition of tomatoes & peppers to the cheese. The fish doesn’t get any fresher, so inquire about the day’s catch. House wines are excellent Sitia varieties.
