Taverna ONISSIMOS (ΟΝΗΣΙΜΟΣ)

You will find Onissimos Traditional Taverna on the main street of Peza, ideally situated in the heart of Heraklion's wine region. After touring some of the wineries in the area, drop in for some real, down-to-earth cooking to balance the alcohol intake.  Most of the time there is lamb or pork shank in the wood oven. Ask about the daily cooked dishes like the string beans & tomatoes (fasolakia) or lamb in a lemon sauce or wine-red sauce. These are how cooked foods used to be when Grandmothers spent all day slaving in the kitchens. The boiled mutton and pilaf (rice cooked in the liquid of the boiled lamb) which is a favorite at baptisms and weddings is a staple on the menu. There are no suprises in the starters, but what they do, they do it well. The zucchini fritters were particularly tasty. Great live music every Friday night.
