"Popi's Kitchen", as it translates from the Greek, has been around for 12 years or so, but it may be new to many folks who have not yet succumbed to its invariable charms. The funky interior with its mismatched, multicolored furniture, exposed brick walls and assorted paraphernalia hanging on the walls and from the ceiling, give it an air of a student hang-out. This is good, because it recalls those carefree student days. This is a place for meze, ouzo and house wine. There are plenty of interesting options, many with an Arabic/Lebanese twist, such as my favorite pork with tons of cumin, sun-dried tomatoes and feta. Be prepared to eat a loaf of bread just to sop up all the mouth-watering juices. The saganaki is made with Manouri for a welcome change and it was lightly crusted with light and dark sesame seeds (nigella) and served with honey. As an alternative to fried potatoes, try them grilled with a garlic yoghurt sauce. Daily there are some specials, like a Boureki with lamb and spinach. On Sunday afternoons, there is a young, enthusiastic trio of musicians playing rembetika favorites.
