Fresh on the dining scene in Chania, Safran can be found along the quieter part of the magnificent old port of Chania. It is housed in a beautifully renovated Neo-classical stone building with ultra-modern, chic design, serving Mediterranean cuisine for both meat and seafood lovers.  Start with one of the many superlative salads, such as mixed greens with sun-dried tomatoes, dried fruit and grilled Haloumi cheese with a vinaigrette of sinapi (mustard seeds) and honey.  Move on to Calamari stuffed with cheese and herbs or mussels steamed with Asyrtico wine, thyme and saffron.  Don't leave out the fabulous pastas and risottos.  For a main, try the Filet of Grouper with tagliatelle and vegetables or Pork Tenderloin stuffed with Haloumi and prunes. The wine list is very well-conceived and is overseen by a divinely knowledgeable Sommelier.
