About Meet and Eat
MEET and EAT in CRETE was conceived in early 2007 with the objective of unveiling the wealth of quality Cretan cuisine from wild mountain greens and artisinal cheeses along with fine wines produced from indigenous Cretan grape varieties. It is for discerning diners who long to discover the pleasures of these authentic tastes in an interesting assortment of some of the finest restaurants and tavernas on the island, specializing in traditional Cretan cuisine, "nouvelle" Cretan, or a fusion with contemporary Mediterranean tastes.
Meet and Eat Guides, run by partners Agnes Weninger and Krisztina Csedrik, is the primary product of Lizard Publishing & Marketing, based in Heraklion, Crete. It is the FIRST pocket-sized, FREE Gastronomic Guide for the island of Crete and is still the ONLY one of its kind on the market. It has always been an INDEPENDENT publication with no funding/sponsorship coming from any municipality, prefecture, region, chamber of commerce, tourism body or the EU.
The idea for Meet and Eat Guides was simmering for years as both partners spent a lot of time holidaying in various parts of Greece and having a lot of bad food experiences. Some time later on a blustery winter day in their favorite restaurant in Budapest, the idea was born. Local Restaurant guides simply did not exist and tourists would be forced to fend for themselves, relying on not particularly up-to-date travel books, maps with a few advertisers on them or less than objective tour operators. Eating out and drinking good wines have become a fundamental part of the overall travel experience, and many tourists would leave Greece with literally a bad taste in their mouth. The time seemed right to launch a guide that would highlight the best in wining and dining on each island or geographic area of Greece, thereby bringing together discriminating guests with quality establishments.
For months before the publication of the first edition, Agnes and Krisztina ate and drank their way around the major city centers of CRETE and in the summer of 2007 launched their first prototype.
Each edition of the Guide is updated with restaurants being added (or deleted) on a continuous basis and every establishment listed in the Guide has been personally visited and continues to be visited on a regular basis, always at Lizard Publishing’s own expense.
Meet... Agnes & Krisztina
Agnes graduated from the University of Guelph with a degree in Hotel & Food Administration, then later obtained an MBA. An interest in food was an early obsession and she opened her first restaurant/country inn near her hometown of Ottawa, Canada at the age of 25. A brief 10-year foray into international advertising was followed by another restaurant in the world-heritage Castle district of Budapest. A love of Greece (and Greeks) brought her to vacations all over the country and more specifically to Crete off and on since 2005. In May of 2007, she founded Meet and Eat Guides with her partner Krisztina. In addition to Meet and Eat, she has taught Management and Marketing at Minoan International College of Tourism in Heraklion.
Krisztina graduated from the Open University Business School in Budapest and later earned other specialized certificates and diplomas in Marketing. After 10 years with International Ad agencies in Budapest, she switched to the „client side” and did a 4 year stint as an International Product Manager in Vienna for an American Pharma company. A love of Greece (and Greeks) gave her the chance to spend many summers in Halkidiki, in Athens and on the island of Paros. In May of 2007, she founded Meet and Eat guides with her partner Agnes.
